Indiana's Bicentennial:

200 Years of Hoosier music

2016 marked the Bicentennial of the great State of Indiana, and we at Indy CD & Vinyl are so incredibly proud to have supplied the entire music playlist at The Indiana State Museum in Downtown Indianapolis!

All of the music we hand-selected represents works that have been created by Indiana musicians, composers, writers, and producers, making all the songs connected to Indiana in some way.

Popular music has always been used to express our social, political, and economic life. Throughout the 19th Century, patrons eager for music attended festivals and went to concert halls that popped up in cities across Indiana. Places like Germainia Theater, the Grand Opera House and Maennerchor Hall provided programs that were dominated by classical musical forms, but slowly regional folk songs and popular American hymns and ballads began to work their way into the mainstream.

The early decades of the 20th Century saw a revolution in popular music with the emergence of ragtime, blues, and jazz. African Americans became a creative force in clubs along Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis, and in recording studios like Gennett Records in Richmond. Then, in 1956, the birth of rock 'n roll revolutionized American popular music once again, dominating the airwaves and live performances.

Today, the Indiana music scene is thriving. From serious songwriters and musicians to jam bands having a good time, home-grown artists from all across Indiana continue to produce creative and exciting content in all genres of music. Nightclubs, music venues, and record stores throughout Indiana help support local artists, nurturing a vibrant cultural scene.

Below is a list of artists represented in the playlist we curated, playing in the State Museum lobby and bridge. Please dig deeper and listen to as many as you can!
